Installation Eaton Centre, 1994
This is a site specific work produced for Ten Parts of the Body, a women's collective in Toronto. This work includes a lit transparency (4'x6') projected over a photograph of a babies eyes; below this is a shelf with a pair of ear moulds for hearing aids and placed on the floor is a pair of gold leaf baby's shoes. The transparent image is a photograph of a deaf football team the people, each labeled DD or DA depending on their level of hearing; the photographer-historian has also numbered the people to aid in the recognition of the individuals. This double labelling, and shadowing over the eyes, questions our society's fascination with labelling and the ramifications of early labelling of children who are different.
